UAF Center for Teaching and Learning is looking for an instructional designer to join our highly collaborative office culture focused on improving education by providing a wide range of faculty and course development support.
As one of our Instructional Designers, you’ll work with UAF instructors to create online courses in a variety of disciplines, assist faculty and staff in learning best practices in teaching with technology, and further the Center for Teaching and Learning's mission of providing a high quality, interactive educational experience to students in Alaska and around the world. A primary focus will be on UAF’s portfolio of global courses on the edX platform. This is a Fairbanks-based position with flexible and remote work options.
Familiarity/working knowledge of some combination of the following:
Existing and emerging distance education technologies and methodologies; Instructional design based on learning theory; Cloud-based and collaborative web tools; Web and graphic design; Learning and/or content management systems; Multimedia production. Multiple operating systems including OS X, Windows, iOS, and Android. Skill in evaluating, reporting on, and implementing collaboration and instructional technologies; familiarity with accessibility best practices; team building and conflict resolution; ability to understand and interpret educational needs and develop effective solutions; ability to communicate effectively and to develop and provide seminar-style training to faculty and staff; willingness and ability to adapt to new tools and methods as they emerge.Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a related field and experience working in the field of online learning. Candidates must be willing to learn new technologies and practices, including graphic design, web design, media production, accessibility standards, and adult learning theory.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and four years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Position Details:
This position is located on the UAF campus in Fairbanks, and flexible on-site/hybrid work arrangements may be considered in accordance with UA regulations. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package . UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule , Grade 80, based on education and experience.

Possible areas include but are not limited to: teaching in higher education, online course design, application of accessibility guidelines to online content, multimedia creation and editing, graphic and web design, open educational resources, cloud-based collaboration, and presentation or face-to-face training and facilitation skills. Successful candidates may have weaknesses in some areas that are outweighed by expertise in others.
Successful portfolios are easy for users to navigate, include multimedia, and provide some descriptive context for the elements included. Portfolios are not meant to be comprehensive of an applicant’s work, but to highlight specific skills and abilities. The design of the portfolio is considered along with the content and applicants will be asked to present on their portfolio at the interview stage.
