Knowing that Carthage students’ summer break was filled with activity, we wanted to highlight the improvements that kept us busy while you were away. Here are some of the changes you’ll notice on campus.
Now operated by Slingshot, the campus bookstore has reopened at its usual spot in the Campbell Student Union. Stop by the renovated space to check out a new selection of Carthage-branded apparel and gifts. Those who opted out of the Equitable Access Program can arrange to pick up their textbooks and other course materials at the store.
Crews just wrapped up the second phase of renovations on the lower level of Lentz Hall, where Carthage’s Engineering Center is now complete! New engineering facilities include an Electro-Mechanical Lab, a Thermal-Fluid Lab, a seminar room, faculty offices, and a research space.

The former employee lounge at the northwest corner of Lentz Hall has been converted to additional lab space for Carthage’s growing nursing program. Next door is another notable addition: a Virtual Reality Lab, equipped with VR headsets and a medical simulation library to supplement nursing students’ off-campus clinical experience.
Workers installed new turf at Art Keller Field, giving several of Carthage’s athletic teams a brand new surface to practice and compete on. It comes with a slightly different look, featuring the Firebirds’ striking logo at midfield and more brightly colored designs in the end zones.
The interior of the Johnson Arts Center continued to get a touch-up, this time on the lower level. A floor above that, a conceptual mural by Jeanette Ackerman ’25 livened up the Mac design lab and the music education program got its own dedicated space.
Carthage’s new laundry vendor, Caldwell & Gregory, replaced the washers and dryers in each residence hall. The machines operate completely coin-free, so students can pay using the Speed Queen app. The College sent students an email with details in early August.
The College dedicated a new sculpture outside the Walter Fritsch Meditation Chapel, just across the road from Lentz Hall. Depicting three curious children exploring nature, “A Teaching Moment” is a gift from the late Jack ’49 and Mae ’52 Harris — a generous and loyal Carthage couple.
