POSITION TITLE: Court Deputy Sheriff

REPORTS TO: Jail Administrator or designee
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
WAGE GRADE: 9
General Statement of Duties
This position provides security for the Brookings County Circuit Court. The Court Deputy may be called upon to detain or arrest individuals failing to comply with orders of the Court or individuals with active warrants and may involve physical contact. Incumbent is responsible for serving the legal process of the courts. The Court Deputy assists in the supervision of the Brookings County Detention Center under the Jail Administrator and Jail Sergeant. This position provides general legal guidance to the Sheriff, protecting the law-abiding citizen and enforcing the law through ongoing work in the County. Often working alone, the Court Deputy must exercise independent judgment and discretion and must act decisively during crises and emergencies. The Court Deputy position may be assigned to specific or special projects and job assignments related to law enforcement operations.

Transport prisoners to courtrooms, prison, medical facility and other locations as needed. Guard prisoners receiving medical care while in a medical facility.
Carry out orders and enforce directions from State and Federal Court System.
Comply with all orders, policies and regulations governing the activities of the Sheriff’s Department.
Maintain confidentiality.
Attend various workshops, seminars, and training as deemed necessary.
Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies established by the County.
Assist in supervision of the Brookings County Detention Center including being “on-call” on a rotating schedule.
Arrange and transport prisoners located in other counties back to the Brookings County Detention Center.
Arrange and transport inmates sentenced to the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
Assist in management of inmates in the Brookings County Detention Center.
Perform such other duties as deemed necessary.

Experience and Education
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification.
South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy Certification required.
One (1) year experience in law enforcement preferred or an equivalent combination of experience and education may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Valid South Dakota Drivers License.
Valid South Dakota Law Enforcement Certification.
Successful competition in written and/or oral interviews.
